02Why the MX-5

The best-selling roadster in history. Still in production.

1,084 kilograms, rear-wheel drive, a six-speed manual gearbox and a roof you open with one hand, from the seat, at the lights. The MX-5 has not changed because it had no reason to. It comes in two versions: Soft Top, with a fabric roof, and RF, with a retractable hardtop.

Just over a tonne, that is all

1,084 kilograms, driver included. Every gram was negotiated, and everything else follows from that: 136 horsepower is enough, 258 mm brakes are enough, and the car feels alive at 60 km/h, not only at 160.

Soft Top or RF

The Soft Top has a fabric roof you open by hand, in a second, without getting out of the car — €32,290. The RF, the one in the picture, has an electric retractable hardtop and a fastback silhouette — €34,790. The same mechanicals, two characters.

An engine that revs to 7,000

1.5 litres, naturally aspirated, with peak power at 7,000 rpm and a six-speed manual gearbox. It is the kind of engine you use all the way to the top, not one that gives you all its torque at 1,800 and then loses interest.
